Rhetorical principles of persuasion and the social media influencers of today

As speaker, communicator or even undercover officer the core of your performance is the holy trinity:

Ethos
Logos
Pathos

Aristotle's rhetorical trinity of Ethos, Logos and Pathos are nowadays well known, emphasised by communication experts/consultants. Many of them don't have any rhetorical, philologic or linguistic studies nor any behavioral or psychological studies. Hence the use of the rhetorical terms tend to be superficial and they don't anchor the terms in science nor in empiric of their own. The Trinity is fundamental but also basics in rhetoric. Many of the self-appointed rhetoric experts and consultants often focus on this. The purpose of the trinity Ethos, Logos and Pathos is often missed.

Ethos, logos and pathos are a structure for achieving a goal of persuasion. For this purpose, Cicero explained in his book De Oratore about the speaker's duties with the his proofs:

Delectare
Movere

That's the most important effect! Rhetoric is not about persuading, it's not true or false, it's not even right or wrong. Are you rhetorician, who believe in relativism, believe in human's power of influencing, passing on ideas and thoughts. Rhetoric is about convincing others!

To be convincing is to be genuine, or authentic. The rhetorical term is Pistis. Keep in mind that you realize that it is not just logical without common sense. Use old school to become a super Ninja Influencer of today!

Priming is a technique whereby exposure to one stimulus influences a response. For example, you can prime someone to feel warm, and relaxed at an interview by first offering something hot to drink, a cup of coffee. The warmth from holding the cup and sipping on the coffee, the heat will provide a sense of comfort.

How to not only prime yourself but also show your confidence, even if you're not. A person knowing where to go looks much more confident. The same if you want to reduce the likelihood of becoming pickpocketed once you leave the airside at the airport. If you pre-planned where to go, not start hesitation, or bring up the phone or a map exposing not only your insecurity but also what kind of cellphone you have to offer for a thief, you mitigate the risk of pickpocket.

The same goes for the first impression at an interview or a first date. If you been recce, i.e. reconnoitre, the venue the day before, knowing where to go, how the entrance is, the menu and the surroundings you are very likely to not only become more confident once the meeting takes place, but you are also giving the non verbal cues of confidence.

Confident people always know where they're going, or primed themselves to. They don't give the impression of insecurity: hunched shoulders staring at the shoes, but facing people, giving them a smile. This might sound like a quick fix hence most of us are not only \"not confident\" but also introverts. But to start becoming more conscious of your own behaviour and finding cues to priming yourself, you actually will improve your confidence. Fake it till you make it, and mind your steps! Sweden's character is well suited for social distancing and physical distancing. When Sweden in April issued new binding guidelines asking the citizens to reduce their social contacts and keep distance from others at all times, the cafés, shops and restaurants immediately organised the cues with distance.

Personal space is part of the non-verbal communication. It is the space surrounding each person, which all of a sudden is not a cultural or a personal behaviour, but the law.

Our Public zone is broadly more than 1.25 meters, and the Social zone where we do interact with another person is up to 1.25 meters. The Personal zone is roughly 0.60-1.25 meters. And the very Intimate zone where you become very uncomfortable if any but closest family break the barrier, is up to about 0-0.60 meters. However the discrepancy is remarkable even within Europe. The further north you are the more physical distance.

Will the zones expand worldwide? Will you push all strangers and acquaintances out to the Public zone far beyond 1.25 meters permanently? Will handshakes, hugs, kisses and physical contact be replaced with new greetings, new Social codes?

Swedes like to keep a remarkably wide so-called interpersonal distance. Will the personal zone expand? Swedes' Social zone was about 1.25 meters prior to the Corona outburst. The Mediterraneans Social zone were less than 0.6 meters. People always try not to break those barriers. But how will the pandemic affect them, will the already distant Nordic people keep their Public zone and the Mediterraneans expand their Public zone?

In line with the Chatham House rule, to be able to participate and act and refer to the training but not reveal the identity nor the affiliation of the trainees or the trainer makes the session not only exclusive but scarce.

Today, secrets and confidentiality are even more unique, in a world where everything is shared and transparency is the new default. In a world where friendships and relationships change and the world spins. Secrets are part of scarcity, a principle of persuasion, but will the capacity of keeping not only a way of a secret be the new black?

Money has always made employers willing to take the risk, actually the most common risk. Ideology is used to make an employer spy, whether it is a discrepancy between our core values and the corporate values, for instance, it is a vulnerable spot of you. Compromise by blackmail, outing the employee's innermost secrets have pushed employees deep down to the pitch dark of no return. Ego and excitement can go a long way to maintain an insider's productivity, often with revenge or retaliation as a motivator. MICE might be a generic and superficial construction. A trained professional operative, a case officer, will be much more cautious and go beyond MICE. He will not use rocket science but common sense and the Science of persuasion, he will find you within and he will persuade you by using Dr. Robert Cialdini's Principles of Persuasion. Make sure you know how to identify them, and make an assessment.

Is this charming acquaintance a friend or foe? Don't become the enemy within, become your employer's asset, not a vulnerability. Make your link a solid one! Invest time in knowing your motivators and needs, as well as your colleagues.

Throughout my career as an operative, I realized that the key to being successful is to be authentic. There is no shortcut! You need to be flesh and blood. And lately, this has been a commercial truth as well. Look at the global IKEA and their ads and product catalog. Year 2016 something happened. All the \"home styling\" pictures were replaced with pictures of messy kitchens, beds that were not made, etc., in order to communicate that real people actually lived in IKEA furnished homes.

The same goes for interpersonal communication. You want to interact with real people, with stains and flaws, people who are human. You want to see the person behind the mask, even more challenging today with facial masks due to the pandemic.

And actually, if people don't signal authenticity, you're unconsciously suspicious. Training surveillance teams, undercover officers, but also management, I usually fall back to these rhetorical principles of being real, the rhetorical baseline of Ethos Logos and Pathos. Use priming and prepare yourself by asking yourself, am I for real? There are five questions; five Cues you can ask yourself before entering a scene, a scenario, or a board meeting:

Who am I?

Where do I come from?

Where am I going?

Why?

What way and what's my mood?

And actually, these 5W are applicable in reversed situations as well. Training security officers and checkpoint staff, I train them in very much the same 5W for first screening of a person assessing verbal and non-verbal leakage as well as behavior.

How do you make behavior analysis of a person with criminal intentions? How does a suicide bomber, a stalker, a burglar, or hostile reconnaissance blend in? A disparity or not? You know your environment and know when it is normal activity or if it is out of the ordinary. Trust your instincts when it tells you things don't look right, and if you follow the protocol of 5W you can give a more distinct assessment on if someone is for real!!

Today I had a very interesting day conducting risk assessment – training (re:view) customized for a special branch of security and covert work. By using the Security Risk Management (SRM), we focused on the security risk schema, the intelligence collecting, and how to make adequate and accurate risk analysis. By identifying generic risks and specific actors driven risks and filing them, the company builds their own institutional know-how. These will be assessed by the 5 x 5 risk matrix based on likelihood and impact.

The systematic risk assessment SRM is an evaluation of relevance, urgency needs, and implementing methodology of the actor in a given operation or project. Spy the spy

The threat from espionage did not end with the Cold War. A number of hostile states continue to collect sensitive information about EU's member states and about the EU's foreign politics and capacity, in order to advance their own military, political, technological, commercial, and economic programs.

The risks to be targeted increase significantly when you travel to foreign countries on mission, business, or even on private trips.

The EEAs staff, missions, and offices in Brussels, Vienna, the Hague, are all targets for foreign intelligence services. Some foreign intelligence services routinely intercept the communications of EU staff abroad on official business.

In 2003, eavesdropping devices were discovered in the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels, likely to find out details of member states' negotiating positions during the long and complex talks on EU enlargement.

In 2018, Dutch authorities caught a Russian GRU team of spies trying to intercept the communication at the OPCW headquarters in the Hague.

In 2020, journalists have uncovered the existence of an extensive network of intelligence agents in Brussels 2020, former EU officials who have been spying for foreign intelligence services. These are just a few examples official to the public. The spy business is here to stay.

Your staff, your human resources are not only the most expensive and exclusive investment within your company, organization, or institution. It is the most valuable piece of an organization. One would think Cyber Crime, Social engineering, and Hacking would make the traditional Spy out dated, and espionage and face to face meeting for recruiting agent insiders an ancient tradecraft.

The truth is the opposite. And just recently another contracted consultant in Sweden was indicted, facing trial over espionage charges by selling intellectual property from Volvo and Scania to the Russian foreign intelligence Service SVR, alleged putting Swedish national security at risk.

The consultant was traditionally recruited, and according to the investigation, he already had access to intelligence (IP) and was not an infiltrator but an insider vetted, cultivated, and recruited by the Russian SVR-Spy working under a diplomatic cover at the embassy. Most known insider acts are conducted by employees that have been deployed for some time prior to the act of crime.

The operation has been stretched over years, like most insiders, convicted for espionage or fraud. Other inside acts are normally shorter period of time.

The consultant claims he is innocent, and said the Diplomat just helped him with money hence he had an economical dilemma, and he appreciated the Diplomat's genuine interest for his work. So far what has been revealed, the consultant follows the protocol concerning personal pre-dispositions and stressors, and the SVR-Spy follows the protocol of agent running. It will be most interesting to take part of the investigation.

What has been told so far, I reckon this a spy case done by the book, following the strict protocol where the consultant has been targeted the traditional way and gone through all the steps of assessment before he eventually was recruited and the investment paid off. And so far, the consultant shows the vulnerabilities of an insider, vulnerabilities that Insider Risk Management programs like i.e., SignPostSix, work proactively with in order to identify and mitigate.

Has the consultant followed the pathway of an insider, and is it likely he has been an unintended insider as he claimed? Have the Russians identified motives within his personal pre-dispositions and finally waited to recruit him once the stressors occurred? Time will tell or the investigation will.

Surrounded by idiots…or the need of a correct screening and on-boarding process.

By using the structure of HumInt recruiting in business deployment process, you will likely avoid risky personalities.

We always strive to categorize people, put them in boxes, just like the author Mikael Erikson successfully has done with his book \"Surrounded by Idiots\". But is it correct? We want to simplify, make it logical, and to understand each other.

To look upon each person as an individual and unique personality would make it impossible. We need to structure, simplify, and therefore we make all sorts of generalizations and categories, also with personalities. And human intelligence is all about making generalizations, assumptions, to find patterns. Intelligence is to take old experiences and apply them to new situations. Similarly, we are looking for structures in other people.

However, generalizations and personality tests will always be questioned, and many of the models are based on Carl Jung's theories. However, since the last decades, the majority of psychologists have left Jung's theories because of lack of empirical clinical studies. More recent research shows that personalities are not that fixed but more dynamic and changing in situations and during a person's lifetime. However, the research most psychologists find applicable is the Big Five theory. The degree of each is not static for a person but changes due to the situation and the person's maturing. The acronym OCEAN:

Openness
Conscientiousness
Extraversion
Agreeableness
Neuroticism

A spy has always put a lot of effort into the \"onboarding\" of an agent. The objective of targeting and vetting is to filter and find a tentative asset, with best access, motive, and ability. In the aptitude, more and more attention has been focused on the person's ability. It is especially important if you make a cold approach, i.e., no opportunity to prime or cultivate the target ahead of the pitch. Therefore, the target's risk appetite is incredibly important. Otherwise, the target would not even start the conversation with you, acting \"better safe than sorry\" in all situations, doesn't give you a window of opportunity.

But do you want staff with the risk appetite? You need to identify what personality is preferable. Before onboarding, consider the OCEAN but also pre-dispositions raising questions. Scientists at Carnegie Mellon University have identified the most common personality traits at malicious insiders. Red flags at the vetting:

Frustrations
Ethical flexibility
Reduced loyalty
Sense of entitlement
Lack of empathy
Anger at authority

The targeting and vetting is crucial and recruiters need to take it seriously if they want to keep the staff for longer terms, and keep them content, loyal. And look at some of the most famous spy cases, how well the agents have been vetted and recruited. I believe the corporate world has a lot to learn from the spy business.

Vucic visited Washington this week to sign a US-brokered deal with Avdullah Hoti, prime minister of the breakaway Serbian region of Kosovo. The agreement was touted as a great diplomatic success for Washington, which managed to bring the two Balkan rivals closer together. Among other things, Kosovo, a Muslim-majority entity, agreed to recognize Israel while Serbia agreed to move its embassy to Jerusalem, following in the footsteps of the US.

The Mole within your organization is likely not a Mole but very likely targeted and vetted by MICE, or actually by using the protocol MICE, an acronym for Money, Ideology, Coercion, and Ego. By using the techniques behind the acronym MICE, you understand Your Adversary.

There are many different reasons why malicious actors would conduct an insider act. The principles can be used to determine the motives behind those conducting the targeting. Having this understanding will enable visibility into your entity's risk management and will allow your security staff to.

Money

Money, or actually greed, is the most common motive. Money is a huge motivator for us all, and it's no different for espionage targeting.

Ideology

For those who fall into the hacktivist group of threat actors, ideology is a big motivating factor, for instance, Qanon in USA or other groups destabilizing society during the Pandemic.

Well-known hacktivists align with these new globalized and Internet-based groups Anonymous, use ideology to inspire themselves and like-minded followers to support their many \"causes.\" Their latest campaigns focusing on vaccination are very much ideology driven. These campaigns revolve around ideology.

Ideology can also be based on patriotism. Russian actors, who some maintain are not controlled by the Kremlin, have been known to target adversaries in recent Russian military actions, like those seen in the Ukraine and the Russo-Georgian conflict of 2008.

Compromise

The term compromise here is more about the threat in the human terrain, or the insider threat, and not the digital one. Compromise can be seen in the form of blackmail or coercion of an individual to assist in corporate espionage or sabotage. If a malicious actor has knowledge that poses a threat to someone's livelihood or social standing, it would be easy to coerce that individual into performing actions on behalf of the actor. These actions could be assisting with remote or physical access or giving up proprietary data, intellectual property, or sensitive system information.

Ego

Finally, there are those who hack simply for the joy of taking down a target and inflating their ego. They want to establish themselves and their power in the community.

Conclusion

When determining what your threat landscape is and the risks to your information and assets, knowing an attacker's motivation can allow for grouping and categorizing these threats. Using \"MICE\" to gain this understanding will enable you to determine:

For those that are financially motivated, is my business a high target?
Would those that are motivated by ideology view my organization as a threat to their social views?
Are there former employees that have left with a grudge and have the knowledge of our infrastructure to gain unauthorized access?

Next level of identifying the motives beyond MICE

Focusing just on MICE would be to simplify the recruitment of an insider or an agent. Most services and clandestine services have either developed these techniques themselves supported by in-house psychologists or piggy-backed on publicly accessible and very much applicable research within social psychology. One who has been questioning this old approach of MICE or actually remodeled it is the former CIA spook Randy Burkett. He has argued that today's agent recruiters must learn and use the significant findings of human motives and the means for influencing people. He often refers to the studies and experiments of Dr. Robert Cialdini. Burkett aligns with my own experience of using these generic factors for influencing people. These are applicable to tentative insiders as well. These techniques have been elaborated by Daniel Pink, and both of them as authors shared many different approaches to the psychology of influencing. Concerning improving the productivity of existing insiders or agents, other techniques of management are even more efficient. Therefore, I make a distinction between motivation factors and motives.

And is it to be considered a malicious act? Is she an intended or unintended Insider affecting the public opinion concerning the suspected terrorist?

Is nudging just to help men to aim, or is it a rhetorical technique unethical, a covert persuasion? What is nudging and is it a new method for management and public health?

One of the very first examples of nudging is actually the etching of the image of a fly into the men's room urinals at Schiphol Airport. I experienced them myself decades ago and yes, I did as figured. The fly image at the bottom of a urinal has improved men's aim, leading to lowered cleaning costs.

The nudging theory proposes positive reinforcement and indirect influences on the behavior and decision making of groups or individuals. Rhetors have stressed the techniques of persuading step by step, and more recently, scientists like Professor Daniel Kahneman and Professor Robert Cialdini have described the pathway of nudging.

In 2020, not only the British government of Boris Johnson, but the Swedish administration as well, decided to rely on nudge theory to fight the coronavirus pandemic. One step at a time, the citizens of UK and Sweden accepted isolation and restrictions. The key was to understanding and acceptance to move the people in the direction of the governments. The citizens gave up their civil rights and accepted not only isolation, but vaccination and geo-surveillance and new vaccine passports. All for a good cause.

Other countries not using the psychology of nudging had a much harder time implementing curfews, restrictions, etc. They might flatten the curve quicker but with less acceptance by the citizens. So the technique is recreated with new terminology at a kickstart in the urinals in Netherlands!

But one cannot resist thinking of the experimental social movement created in the sixties at a Californian high school to explain how the German population could have accepted the actions, using techniques of nudging (but not the terminology) of the Nazi regime, an experiment later filmed, The Wave. It was the most ugly face of nudging, the very same technique of the Nazis; \"we just need to invade yet another country for the Third Reich, just a bit more 'lebensraum', if you just accept that. Then we are fine\", and well they never were. But the other European leaders didn't know what to think and bought it for years. Every technique of covert persuasion can be used both for positive reinforcement as well as negative reinforcement which can be devastating. Be aware of PsyOps going on, I am sure they are studying nudging right now. The psychological warfare and asymmetric threats are as vivid as other disinformation and hacker attacks going on. Be aware and remember, it all started with aiming at a fly.

Rhetoric aims to study techniques used to inform, persuade, or motivate an audience in a given situation. Pistis, i.e., trust is the core of communications, the fabric of human coexistence.

The three pillars of the speech are Ethos, logos, and pathos. But all the scientific terms are just a way to elaborate the process of moving a single person or an audience. The main objective is to build trust in order to move \"words to action\".

Instead of using rhetorical terms, communicators have rephrased it to the acronym AIDA, Attention-Interest-Desire-Action. It makes it more applicable to commercials and easy to use if you haven't studied rhetoric, the proofs, pillars, arrangements, and disposition.

In order to make it more applicable and easier to understand when you build rapport in a professional or private relationship, I am using the pillar Passion Priming & Timing. By using PPT, it is easier to combine the contemporary communication perspectives from Professor Daniel Kahneman as well as Professor Robert Cialdini and the author Daniel Pink, and still keep the core of rhetoric.

Passion – Everybody wants passion in a relationship. And back to the old Greeks and Aristotle, one of the pillars is pathos. And in some societies, political speeches are still very passionate, e.g., United States. And passion is important in any relationship. You need passion, and also the contrasts of pleasure and pain, voluptatem et dolorem. A relationship without passion will seldom be more than an agreement or an arrangement. To master your relationship, first master yourself.

Priming – It is a phenomenon in which exposure to a stimulus affects how a person responds to a subsequent related stimulus. It is an unconscious way our memory works when we are identifying a word, a scent, or something else at hand. You can prime yourself or others positively or negatively. A way to master yourself. If you dress in your favorite suit and listen to your favorite music before a Tinder date, you are likely to feel more self-confident. If a tentative employee is offered a hot cup of coffee before the interview and time to calm down, the interviewee is more likely to be positive and feel comfortable. The heat affects the blood vessels which make the person relaxed.

Timing – But still, if the interviewee does not have the basic needs fulfilled, the interview will never be relaxed and efficient. And Maslow's hierarchy of needs then. A skilled communicator knows the physiological and safety needs to be met before the interviewee can focus on the interview. Timing is actually everything, not only the perspective of Maslow but also life cycle and day cycle. As a colleague once said:

The Tinder Swindler is Shimon Hayut, aka Simon Sharon, Simon Leviev, a convicted Israeli fraudster. He used dating apps to meet multiple women, then established lines of credit and loans in their names. Using persona a legend with a different name and background has become increasingly difficult with today's increasingly open society and globalization.

Not only do the advanced biometric scanners at border crossings match your face with other identities in their database, but anyone can take a good picture of you and google the picture. Facial recognition is more and more common, but it never stopped the Tinder Swindler. The pathway was trust.

To build a fake identity like the Tinder Swindler on Tinder is still possible, hence he uses the classical recruitment steps. He planned the approach knowing \"you never have a second chance to make a first impression\" and exposed his wealth and success and lifestyle, letting the props tell the story instead of himself.

He followed the same steps as recruiting an agent: Initially, he scanned the Internet to find the most efficient social media app to use. Then he found his targets by matching with them on Tinder. Then he likely made a background check to make an assessment of their credibility and personality. Then he used momentum and initiated the first date quick before second thoughts occurred. The first date was crucial to be able to \"cultivate\" them mostly on-line. Then he started to build trust but also a desire.

Then he made an agreement with them, became explicit a couple agreed on dating exclusively. Once he passed those steps, which took different time periods, he eventually dropped the \"accident\" and need of money.

Step by step, he indicated that he had enemies from business, his \"enemies\" were catching up on him. Eventually, he would send pics of his wounded bodyguard, allegedly attacked. He would then text each \"girlfriend\" to say that his credit card could not be used for security reasons due to the risk of being traced.

The difference between person and persona: Person is an individual and persona is a social role, a role you decide. Sometimes person is referred to as a mask, hence it is an image we deliberately present to others. We have a strong desire to be socially accepted by family, groups, voters, etc.

Some people who think they don't wear a mask, a persona, but think they are all transparent and just expose the unfiltered person at all times.

Some personas are thin, some are thick, but we all have a persona or a mask to present to the world. If the mask or the persona is so thick that it stands alone, we call it a legend. As a writer, an author's personas are carefully built to support the narrative.

Personas of public people are built on their true identity, the person, which an author does not need to do. But the politicians, as well as many other persons, make thicker and thicker masks. A personal narrative is a story about yourself, and great personal narrative essay topics include experiences you've had, in real life, people you know, your reactions to books or other writing, and many other options.

Branding is supported by strong personas and storytelling makes a person interesting. Storytelling adds depth and oxygen to the persona.

Putin has for decades built his persona with storytelling, crafting a strongman persona for him. For decades, images were placed in global media with Putin on horseback, Putin in the dojo judo-wrestling, Putin at the shooting range bare-chested, Putin fishing in Siberia and drinking beer with male friends, etc.

Trump promised to \"make America great again\" in the US election, but Putin used the same rhetoric and still uses it; i.e., to bring back the pride of the Soviet era and to restore the status and the old satellite states, starting with Crimea 2014 and continuing with Ukraine invasion 2022. The narrative is: \"Russia was robbed\" referring to the wall that fell 1989 and indolence declaration for instance by Ukraine 1991.

Personas need stories to make them complete, and Putin needs stories to make himself complete to become statues. To be a conqueror adds the stories and action to a bureaucrat nourished in the vacuum of the Cold War lost in transition.

A persona needs stories, like American presidents need wars to be selected, because the stories are how they go from a picture to an action figure. Action speaks louder than words.

The same goes for the former president of the United States, and his slogan \"Make America Great Again - MAGA\" which he copied by the way. He is in desperate need of storytelling to add action to his persona. He starts positioning himself as a martyr, and the latest investigation and seized documents from his house might just make his narrative even better.

Putin's and Trump's personas are assumed roles, masks, carefully created by themselves and their staff. Trump has also created a persona for himself as a business whiz. Their personas work because they tell stories. Stories are part of every community. They communicate culture, organize and transmit information, but remember just because they work or just because they are replicated, that doesn't make them true. They are still just a deliberately added on to the person, the identity who might need some flare of heroism, action, or in some cases even some height.

In an interview in Swedish television (SVT) Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksij Reznikov deny any Ukrainian operation in the Baltic Sea. \"It has nothing to do with us. His lack of Congruence might raise concerns even though the interview does not Cluster of signs nor the Context of the oneliner that made him smirk.

Since early days of television broadcasting we have seen smirks in interviews. One of the the most famous smirks of a most infamous man, Kim Philby when he was interviewed by BBC in the fifties about him as a Russian spy. He explained his innocence while being an alleged spy. Many years after Philby´s defection to the Soviet Union, he gives a seminar to East German spies on how to succeed at espionage.

Another wellknowned smirk of an alleged spy, was also in British television in 2011. A BBC interview with Katia Zatuliveter. She was former British MP's aide accused of being an honey trap spy. Katia was Persona Non grata, but won her appeal against deportation from the UK. In the interview she had a smirked talking about how brilliant it would be to write a diary in order to build a cover as well as claiming she never ever met a Russian spy.

What made Philby to smirk, or Anna, or Oleksij? We might never know. The psychologist and body language expert calls the smirk Duping delight a micro expression a person will display \"the pleasure we get over having someone else in our control and being able to manipulate them\".

Micro expressions or not, smirks at interviews are sending dubious signals. When humans are shown ambiguous facial emotion, we tend to assume that the expression has negative meaning. And once we start hesitating on the verbal content we tend to trust our instincts of interpret non verbal cues.

So far it is all anonymous information from New York Times, and we know false flag operations are common, and we know that since Russia started the war a year ago many false flag operations has taken place as well as disinformation operations. However the unintended smirk of a politician might blur our impression of the interview. And it gives me a gut feeling..is there something more to come?

Rhetorics, Spies and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – The strength of storytelling, no matter what.

Storytelling always involves the presentation of a story—a narrative, no matter if it is a Russian illegalist presenting his fake life in an application for intern at ICC or a court hearing in the Hague where an alleged war criminal from Kosovo explains himself as a freedom fighter.

Many other art forms also present story. There are many cultures on earth, each with rich traditions, customs and opportunities for storytelling. Both the Quran and the Bible are examples of storytelling, bringing an meaning and identity to the people.

And in fact the storytelling had never been more vivid than today, no matter political, religious or marketing interests. We are daily fed with storytelling. But today I think of the great football player Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The narritve of his career is a powerful revenge and about acceptance and identification. His career made an tremendous impact on the Swedish national identity. His narrative and symbol for Swedish values and heritage was used in a classical commercial by the former Swedish (ironically now Chinese) car brand Volvo.

The secret lies in telling a great story, which Zlatan Ibrahimovic did for decades in his career. The narrative is foundation of great marketing hence it humanizes the brand of Volvo, add flesh and blood to the branding.

Today's customer are more interested of buying an identity than the product. Therefore it is important to show them what your brand means instead of only showing what you sell – I will always get goose bumps thinking of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, not because if his football career but for reading the lyrics to the Swedish national hymn and telling the story of Volvo is the ultimate Swedish symbol presented by him some years ago.

The same camera lens is useful as a metaphor to describe a risk assessment either the ficus son details such as firs aid, trauma ags, emergency exits or a bit more zoomed out on the venue the meeting, eavesdropping, attacks or petty crimes. Dual loyalties European Identity and National identity a security risk?

Dual loyalty arises when citizens of a state or a sub group within a state or group could challenge their loyalty to the state. For the citizens in general, the EU is more of a distant community than the nationstate. What does dual loyalties and the European Identity versus citizens national identity has to do with insider risks?

The EU Security specialist Daniel Moberg identified the risk of EU-mission staff seconded from EU member states are fighting dual loyalties. In his quantitive study he pinpointed the risk of national interests and expectations are prioritized which affect the information security safety.

Despite the fact that EU rules and regulations cover almost every issue and override national law, EU authorities do not implement European rules and regulations, but national and sub national authorities do. Even though dual identities for European citizens are harmonized, dual loyalties challenge the protective security and insider prevention. Hence, the national citizenship and EU citizenship challenge the data protection, dual loyalties are known as a risk when it comes to insider prevention where the vulnerabilities, trustworthiness and loyalties are the pillars of an assessment of staff, seconded or contracted.

A transnational society and globalization changes the mindset not only of the individual citizen but the society overall. Already in the 1950s, the professor Ernst B. Haas mentioned that transferring loyalty to Europe and the EU is feasible without giving up the national identity. His research emphasized the process would take time. Crisis will accelerate the process. Russia's war in Ukraine, the need of unify Europe to meet Russia's aggression has stressed the process of multiple identities, not only the National and European, but also NATO membership. On March 2024, the European Council adopted conclusions on Ukraine, security and defense, the Middle East, enlargement and reforms, external relations, migration, agriculture, preparedness and crisis response and the European Union.

The democratic principles of the EU and its member states need to be re:vived and re:asserted caused by the extreme urgency as the recent attacks in various countries of Europe have so tragically reminded us. European internal and external security may be a factor to use to strengthen the feeling of belonging to a common whole. The more solid a dual identity, the easier to cope with dual loyalty. The European identity is important to building a secure society and a safer Europe.

We are all humans of flesh and blood we're made. And every individual you meet are unique, no matter if it is a professional or a private relationship.

Trust are earned, so is relationships. It is rarely built in a single transaction and like anything else worthwhile, trust takes time to earn. We climb the ladder of relationship. In spy craft this is old news. The process of recruiting an agent is very well documented and any spook knows he can't jump the ladder. You need to climbed it, step by step.

But do the rest of us know? We need to do the target process, the approach, the cultivation, before the actual pitch. And do we know how to proceed after the pitch and in case we split up, do we split up in \"good standing\"?

The ladder of relationship is not only useful for business recruitment or social relationships but also for vetting and assessing others. A dedicated employee can do much harm, whether out of greed or feeling mistreated. Businesses need tools to stop dangerous insider threats, malicious or toxic behavior as soon as they arise. And many of us need to find the pattern know how to climb the ladder in order to make genuine and authentic friends or partners.

Dating can feel like a long, uncomfortable and uncertain journey. By using the ladder it will be less stressful and joyful and knowing these basic steps (phases) about dating it will help you succeed in perhaps landing another meeting a new date a step towards a new relationship. Some of you find it less romantic to use the ladder in dating, but actually to understanding what you want in a partner's the first step; the targeting, where you decide how/where to meet new people. When we teach participants about operational security, how to manage and survive lethal attacks, kidnaps and hostage situations, we simplify the stress management by using red, yellow and green zones. We always try to avoid the red zone, because you panic and miss crucial information.

However, most of us experience some Yellow Zone stress on a regular basis and most of us fluctuate between the Green and Yellow Zones often. Many different situations may put us in the Yellow Zone, and we manage to be in the yellow zone for hours, days, even weeks, as long as we descend to the green eventually.

What makes me concerned is the tendency that alot of people today to be in the yellow zone for a very long time. The new order of the world, ongoing war, direct or indirect, for years and the media focusing on negative news like the regression, volatile society, global climate challenges and crime rates, make it even harder for citizens to leave the yellow zone. Some people need help to ground on the green baseline, and we need to support each other to levelage.

Fellow citizens are in a state of heightened alertness and arousal, signaling that emotions are starting to escalate. We need to not only use active coping mechanisms to prevent a shift into the Red Zone, but to descend to the green zone to avoid the stress leading to burnout and the importance of leveraging your best energy throughout life, not only in crucial lethal situations, but in this era and new order in the world.

The Yellow Zone represents mild and reversible stress. We all experience Yellow Zone stress, the workup for a deployment, or changes for our children at school. When we notice our stress level is elevating, we can work to ensure adequate sleep and rest, and actively work to manage what we can.

I don't say the alarmistic news or constant awareness and resilience policy is wrong, but I say that it puts citizens' health at risk if we do help each other to levelate sometimes. Without it, the news tends to affect health, wellbeing and then, in the long run, the resilience of society.

We need to keep self-distance, humor, lust and feelings at a level.
